Well, the OpenOffice suite is .completely free alternative that includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and more. Each program ha.comparable features to its Microsoft counterpart and i.completel.compatible with Microsoft Office files. I regularly pass .DOC and .XLS files back and forth between the two and have never had a problem. An added bonus: OpenOffice Writer lets you save your documents as .PDF files. Good luck doing that with Microsoft Word without shelling out some more dough!
