Interview session from
lddreams.com/ Hello Jeff Geis. I would like to ask you a few questions in a interview.
Thank you for accepting this interview.
1. When did you start working for Epic?
I started working for Epic Games early
2003. I worked from home as a contracted 3d artist for a few months before I was asked to join them in North Carolina to finish UT2004 in house.
2. Can you please tell a few good experiences you had while working on the UT 2004 project?
Epic Games was the bes.company I have ever worked for. Everyone there was not only very friendly and helpfull, but also fun to work with and some of the most positive minded people I have ever met.
I would just like to say this to the guys at Epic Games, I really miss you guys! Tim, Mark, Cliff, Allen, Anne, Jeff, Laurent, Stuart, and everyone else! Just too many names to list here... I will never forget the good times we had together!
We woul.come in to work, get started working on our code, models, level, textures, rigs, animations, textures etc... then after we had got a good chunk of work started, we would all go to the break room and get coffee and bagles and shoot the Bull for a few mins there. Cliff would usually join us and we would just have a great time joking around for a few mins. Then back to work, we would really hit the grind stone and get a lot done for that days play testing.
We spent alot of time together after work also, going out to eat at a lot of nice resturants there in Raleigh. We even went bowling once! We would go to the movies, video game stores, malls etc... I had a great time!
3. On a personal Level what would you suggest for a Independant Developer that is starting off in the Industry?
I got started doing this work by working on game mods for Quake, Unreal, Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, etc... Today there are a lot of small gam.companies working on various small independant games, I would suggest contacting some of these smalle.companies and doing some work for them. This will lead to more projects as you have content you can show and game titles you can list in your resume.
4. What is your main Motivation?
My main motivation is a facination for 3d. I love th.computer Generated 3d World. Creating your own worlds and environments, stories tha.come to life in 3d, games etc...
5. Can you please also tell me when someone starts off modeling what is the first method you would suggest for a beginner?
I use .combination of box modeling and primitives to rough out what I need to create. Use what you fee.comfortable with, take shortcuts when you can.
6. What software tools do you use for your Modeling and Animation work flows?
I use a variety of software depending on what I want to create. Some good suggestions for 3d modeling would be 3dsmax, Maya, Modo, Zbrush, etc...
For textures you could try Paintshop Pro, Photoshop, etc...
